It is late March, still the rainy season farther down the Puget Sound in Seattle, in Tacoma, but here the sun had shone without fail for the past three days.

“As much as I hate to see it,” Kathleen’s mother opines from the backseat, “you can really understand why so many people would want to move up here.”

Sequim bills itself rightly as a geographic wonder, situated fortuitously in the heart of the Dungeness Valley beneath what was known in meteorology as a Blue Hole. Though clouds bank high on both sides of the deep, green bowl, the skies over Sequim remain, for the most part, preternaturally blue.

“Yeah,” says Kathleen. “Who doesn’t like the sunshine?”
